Frontline Insurance Finds Success and Talent in Northern Ireland
At NI Connections, we're always excited to hear stories of businesses thriving in Northern Ireland. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Kurt Bonigut, Chief Information Officer of Frontline Insurance, to learn about his experience establishing a successful technology operation in the region.
Meet Kurt and Frontline Insurance
Kurt brings 30 years of IT experience to the table, spanning consulting, e-commerce, and insurance, with a strong track record as a CIO for various carriers. Frontline Insurance, based in Florida, is a Property and Casualty Insurance company providing customisable insurance products across six states.
Why Northern Ireland?
Frontline's journey in Northern Ireland began with a strategic focus on tapping into the region's impressive talent pool. "We recognised the talent pool in NI and chose to set up (what started out as a small) operation focused on data science, data analytics and web development," Kurt explains. The initial success of this venture led to significant expansion into Guidewire development, Development Operations, and Quality Engineering.
"Once we became more familiar with the level of talent that was accessible, we made an effort to grow our presence in NI to where we are today."
The Benefits of Setting Up Shop in NI
Frontline has experienced numerous benefits from their nearshore operation in Northern Ireland, from exceptional talent, a strong cultural fit and of course financial advantages.
"The educational level and quality of team members we are able to onboard is excellent and the alignment between our teams in the US and counterparts in Northern Ireland, could not be stronger. The support we received from Invest Northern Ireland together with UK Research and Development tax credits makes Northern Ireland an attractive place to do business. This is in addition to the more competitive salary levels here in Northern Ireland."
Surprises and Discoveries
What surprised Kurt most about setting up in NI? “The weather! But seriously, having never been before, the welcoming nature of the people in NI as well as the amazing transformation that has occurred, particularly in Belfast, is awe inspiring. I think it speaks to how resilient the people of NI are and their ability to get the job done. Also, the sheer beauty of the place. You get a sense of how amazing it is, but when you see the sites in person it is just gorgeous.”
The vibrant student population in Belfast also impressed Kurt, further highlighting the region's strong talent pipeline.
Navigating Business Culture
While the overall experience has been positive, Kurt notes some differences in business culture, differences in on boarding and employment law. "Having a strong local HR team is key in my opinion," he advises.
What has been the greatest benefit for Frontline opening in Northern Ireland?
"We have recognised several benefits having opened our Frontline UK office, the top 3 in my mind would be:
- The ability to add very skilled talent and grow our team.
- Being able to deliver value to Frontline at an accelerated pace.
- Gaining financial benefit from being able to operate in the NI market that is extremely business friendly and welcoming.
Kurt's advice for companies considering setting up in Northern Ireland is practical and insightful:
- Build a strong local HR function.
- Partner with a reputable local accounting firm.
- Facilitate team rotations between offices to foster synergy.
- Don't be afraid to pivot if something is not working.
I would wholeheartedly recommend doing business / setting up a business in Northern Ireland to other companies. It can take some time and can be a challenge, but once you have the right people in the right jobs you can realise great potential and really excel."
Quality of Life in Belfast
Kurt's experience extends beyond the office. He praises the high quality of life, the friendly people, and the vibrant city of Belfast. "I love it, the people are just great to be around, and the city of Belfast has so much to offer, it’s a great place to visit and spend time!"
He also appreciates the easy commute. "My walk is about 15 minutes from the Cathedral District (where I stay) in Belfast to our offices in the Linen District! That includes grabbing a latte at Napolean Coffee on Ormeau Ave…. you can’t beat that!"
Frontline Insurance's success story is a testament to the opportunities Northern Ireland offers for businesses seeking talent, growth, and a supportive environment. We're thrilled to see them thriving in the region!
