Rising Singer-Songwriter Making Waves in the Music Scene

We chat to Northern Ireland's Rebekah Fitch about her music career and the high-profile project she was chosen to compose for!

Rebekah Fitch, a talented singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland, has achieved a remarkable milestone by composing and producing the music for the BBC's trailer for the Paris 2024 Olympics. As a rising star in the industry, we chat to Rebekah about how she forged a career in music.

Originally from Belfast, now living in London, Rebekah was surrounded by music growing up and naturally went on to study it at university. “To be honest, it was the only thing I liked enough to choose! I started getting involved in local music scenes, working out how to forge a career in music and meeting and connecting with everyone I could.”

In terms of her overall music style and influences, Rebekah says the great thing about being a composer is that she’s constantly working on such varied projects, so she really gets to challenge herself in working with new genres and experimenting with her sound.

As a singer, I often work with vocal textures, and I’m usually writing anything between punchy alt-pop, emotive soundscapes and dark, cinematic trailer music. I love music that connects emotionally and leaves a lasting impact, I think a lot of Icelandic musicians do that very well, like Sigur Rós, Björk and Hildur Guðnadóttir.”

When starting the writing process, Rebekah normally begins with the melody as that’s what comes most naturally to her! “It’s a good idea to mix it up sometimes though, as it can allow you to come up with different angles and ideas - a different creative stimulus!”

With her music style evolving over time because of different experiences and wanting to develop creatively to keep being inspired, for Rebekah, a big factor in that was moving from being more of a singer-songwriter, to now composing for film and TV. “Your role as a composer becomes more about elevating an existing story, collaborating with others for a bigger narrative, rather than being the main focus yourself. Now it can often be more experimental, more intuitive and textural!

Finding inspiration for projects, Rebekah writes from a personal perspective, things she’s experienced or is going through. “It’s so important to be authentic as an artist, transforming your personal experiences into something that people can universally relate to. On the other hand, if I’m writing for briefs for other music companies, I can be a lot more inventive and imaginative depending on what themes they require!”

So how did Rebekah end up composing and producing the music for the BBC Paris Olympics 2024 trailer? “I had worked with SIREN Music Supervision before, pitching for various projects, so I had the opportunity to pitch for the Paris Olympics trailer, amongst many other amazing composers. It was definitely a wonderful surprise to hear that the BBC had chosen my piece! It’s strange to know how many people have seen and heard it. I’m just very grateful, it’s a really special experience.

What’s next on the horizon for Rebekah? Lots of new music! “I’m constantly working on new briefs for TV and film, writing lots of trailer music and doing some more sonic branding. I love the variety!
